  1. Wookiee Cookies

    November 14, 2011 by Michelle O'Hagan

    Mmm, Bossk Brownies

Darth Vader lays down the law standing atop delicious Bossk Brownies.

Every Wednesday, Ruairi comes home from school with a library book. Most of the time, said book is related to Star Wars. He was SUPER excited to show me his newest book last week saying he knew I’d love it. I, naively, thought it must be something new.

It is the Star Wars Cookbook, with recipies such as “Wookiee Cookies” and “Bossk Brownies.”

    <sigh> At least they’re chocolate. :-)

  2. A Sweet Ride

    April 15, 2011 by Michelle O'Hagan

I’ve written about the Chicago food-trucks before. The naan-wiches, the empanadas. And I’ve heard rumors about a mac ‘n’ cheese truck.

But, today, a pink truck showed up bursting with sweetness. Sweet Ride paid a visit to our building and a line formed quickly. And unsurprisingly, every person in that line was female.

    The Sweet Ride Truck

It’s easy to think that dudes just don’t want to be seen queuing for cupcakes in front of a pink truck. But I’ve also heard that guys just don’t care about sweets in the same way that many women care about sweets.

Which is to say: Guys don’t obsess about sweets the way they obsess about sports or history or sex.

On the other hand, women can think about cake and pudding and chocolates all day long: we plan for Sweet Ride’s arrival; we may actually deprive ourselves of other nutrients all day long if we think there’s even a possibility we’ll have a box of tiny cupcakes for lunch.

    Mini Cupcakes from Sweet Ride

You may have assumed I ate a box of tiny cupcakes for lunch. And you’d be wrong. I ate a cup of organic banana pudding with vanilla wafers in the middle (no word on the origins of the ‘nilla wafers).

It was the best $4 I spent all day. It was so delectable that I tried to linger over it, but I looked down and it was gone in a flash. And now, I’m about to do some investigating to find out when Sweet Ride will be back again for my next pudding fix.

  3. The Empanada-Mobile: Yum

    Empanadas

In a previous post, I mentioned the Gaztro Wagon, a high-end food truck that infrequently visits the building in which I work. Today, I ran downstairs to get a couple of delicious empanadas from the 5411Empanadas truck that draws a crowd every time it shows up.

For just $1.99, they sell piping hot empanadas in the following varieties: beef, ham & cheese, spinach & cheese, sweet-corn, caramelized onion or BBQ chicken.  Today, I ate a sweet-corn empanada and a caramelized onion empanada. I could have eaten three more. So good. Food trucks definitely are one of the nicer perks of working downtown.

  4. Bacon, Bacon & Ham; or Duck Confit?

    September 2, 2010 by Michelle O'Hagan

I walked up to the French Market for lunch today. On my way out the door, I noticed a line–a pretty long one–for a lunch truck parked at the curb. The “roach coach:” that’s what we used to call them back in the day, and they were pretty much a last resort.

The lunchtime line in front of the Gaztro Wagon on Fulton Street.

I chuckled to myself, knowing what Patrick would think about this: Some people will stand in line for anything.

Inside the French Market, a menu caught my eye. The “Signature Sandwich” at Fumare Meats consists of: Gypsy Bacon, Danish Bacon and Boiled Ham. And, the Ciabatta roll is buttered.

Bacon, bacon, ham and butter. Besides a vegetarian, who the hell could not like this?

The bacon, bacon and ham on a buttered roll: notice the sliver of lettuce, for those of you on a health kick.

The nice lady at the counter offered some mayo and mustard, but then quickly informed me that those condiments weren’t really necessary, as the sammie was really good without them. She was right.

On my way back to the office, I noticed the line at the roach coach had died down, but my curiosity was piqued so I wandered over. When I saw the sandwich board there, I knew I’d stand line here myself someday.

The sandwich board at the Gaztro Wagon. I'll have the Duck Confit next time.

The Duck Confit at the Gaztro Wagon contains: melted leeks, brie and apple chutney. Holy cow, I love lunch in Chicago.

  5. Mmmm: Chipotle for iPhone

    August 19, 2010 by Michelle O'Hagan

I’ve had the iPhone app for Chipotle Mexican Grill for several months, but I used it for the first time today.

The Chipotle app allows users to order from the nearest Chipotle location (identified via location services or ZIP code). I chose from the menu and personalized my burrito by adding and subtracting ingredients and entering special instructions (“go easy on the rice”). Then, I could either enter my payment information or indicate that I’d pay when I picked up my food.

The best part? No standing in the long Chipotle line!

My Chipotle at the corner of Lake and Franklin streets in downtown Chicago has a separate entrance where I walked right up to the window, paid for my food and walked out in about two minutes. Fabulous.
